Meet Edgar. A cute, smart and loving furry monster that lives deep in the sewers of New York City. A long time ago, he got lost from his family and was never able to find them again. He is alone and afraid of humans, but loves their inventions and is crazy about donuts and socks. He only gets out of the sewers at night, to steal some donuts and glance at the sky, that he loves so much.

Character Design

When creating Edgar, I had in mind something like the characters from the cartoon "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters", although I didn't want him to be scary. He had to be grumpy but funny to watch — that would captivate the audience and make them root for him in spite of his constant changing mood. I decided to have his eye be really big so that it is possible to always know what he is feeling, and I kept his body round and furry to instigate cuteness.

Upon building Edgar digitally, it was time to decide the color palette. After combining different colors, I settled on the blue design as it is more easy on the eye — although it doesn't mean the different color schemes can't later be used as different characters in Edgar's world. I also played around with the idea of my furry friend finding and playing with human inventions and costumes, but the idea was later discarded for the final piece.

Environment Building

Edgar's world is twisted and uneasy, as he has spent most of his life alone in the sewers. He doesn't come out during daylight so that the humans don't spot him, and he usually chooses a dark alley as his secret rendezvous. I have decided to showcase those emotions by adding textures to the walls and windows and keeping it fairly simple in terms of details. Edgar doesn't care for what's around him, he only sees what really matters to him — in this case, a box of donuts.
